High Blood Pressure is a very common problem which arises when there is too much pressure (a reading of 140/90 mm Hg or greater), which can lead to heart and kidney problems. A person of any age can develop high bp problem. The increase persists over two or more measurements. A person is considered to have prehypertension if the top blood pressure number is between 120 and 139 mm Hg or the bottom number is between 80 and 89 mm Hg. Pressure above 140/90 mm Hg is considered to be high. High blood pressure can be caused by a variety of heart, circulatory system and other organ diseases. Blood pressure is measured with an instrument called sphygnomanometer in millimetres of mercury. The highest pressure reached during each heart beat is called systolic pressure, and the lowest between two beat is known as diastolic pressure. An optimal blood pressure is less than 120/80 mmHg. When blood pressure stays high, greater than or equal to 140/90 mmHg, then it is considered high blood pressure. High blood pressure increases the risk for heart disease and stroke.
