Home Remedies For Cough


Cough is the spasmodic contraction of the thoracic cavity or it can be described as the sudden expulsion of air from the lungs that clears the air passages which continues for several days, or increases in severity, should be immediately checked by a physician to rule out other diseases. A cough is usually initiated to clear a buildup of phlegm in the trachea. Coughs in children are common, and usually accompany many of the normal childhood illnesses. Whenever there is an obstruction or inflammation in the throat or in the upper airways, the brain thinks it to be a foreign object and tries to relieve it by coughing. Coughing is the action by which excess mucus is driven out. A cough may be caused by inflammation of the larynx or the pharynx. A cough can develop in the chest due to change in weather or seasonal changes.

Home Remedies For Cough

The root of the turmeric plant is useful in a dry cough. The root should he roasted and powdered. This powder should be taken in three gram doses twice daily, in the morning and evening.

In a cup of boiling water add 1 tsp turmeric powder and 1 tsp carom seeds (ajwain). Boil till half. Add 1 tsp of honey and have 2 times a day. 

Some saffron strands made into a paste with one betel leaf is to be applied on the infants forehead and soles of the feet.

The patient should avoid meats, sugar, tea, coffee, condiments, pickles, refined and processed foods. He should also avoid soft drinks, candies, ice-cream, and all products made from sugar and while flour.

After the all-fruit diet, the patient should follow a well-balanced diet, with emphasis on wholegrain cereals, raw or lightly cooked vegetables, and fresh fruits.
