Vertigo - Vertigo symptom, treatment, causes
Vertigo is the sensation that one self or one's surroundings are spinning around, usually associated with disturbed balance, and often with nausea and vomiting. Vertigo results from disturbances to the sensory organs that contribute to balance (ears and eyes), and their connections in the brain.
Causes of Vertigo include MENIERE'S DISEASE (distension of the inner ear with fluid), LABYRINTHITIS (inflammation of the inner ear), MIDDLE EAR INFECTION, TRANSIENT ISCHAEMIC ATTACKS, alcohol overdose, certain, drugs, ENCEPHALITIS (brain inflammation), certain tumours within the skull and motion sickness. Persistent or recurrent vertigo is extremely disabling and must be investigated so that the under-lying cause can be corrected if possible. Otherwise, antihistamine and anti cholinergic drugs will help to control the symptoms.
Vertigo is a false sensation that one's self or the surroundings are moving or spinning, usually accompanied by nausea and loss of balance. Vertigo may last for a few moments, several hours, or even days. The person experiencing vertigo often describes the sensation as whirling or spinning. Vertigo is most common in elderly people, but can affect both sexes at any age. It also may be used to describe feelings of dizziness, lightheadedness, faintness, and unsteadiness. Vertigo usually occurs as a result of a disorder in the vestibular system (i.e., structures of the inner ear, the vestibular nerve, brainstem, and cerebellum). The vestibular system is responsible for integrating sensory stimuli and movement and for keeping objects in visual focus as the body moves. When the head moves, signals are transmitted to the labyrinth , which is an apparatus in the inner ear that is made up of three semicircular canals surrounded by fluid. The labyrinth then transmits movement information to the vestibular nerve and the vestibular nerve carries the information to the brainstem and cerebellum (areas of the brain that control balance, posture, and motor coordination). There are a number of different causes for dizzy spells.
