The pain in ureteric colic (also called renal colic) comes in waves and is intense, beginning in the small of the back and usually spreading to the lower abdomen, external genitals and inner thigh. Associated symptoms may be nausea and vomiting, abdominal distension, chills, fever and blood in the urine.

People with ureteric colic need narcotic drugs for pain relief while the obstruction is located by X-ray or ultrasound. Some stones are passed within a day or two but, if this does not happen, prompt removal of the stone or other obstruction wiH relieve the pain and prevent HYDRONEPHROSIS (distension of the kidney with urine).
