Trichomoniasis - Trichomoniasis symptom, treatment, causes

Trichomoniasis is an infection caused by the protozoon Trichomonas vaginalis, a single-cell parasite. Trichomoniasis can cause inflammation of the vagina, bladder arid urethra (which drains urine from the bladder), and sometimes of the Bartholin's glands near the vaginal entrance, and the glands near the opening of the urethra.

Trichomoniasis (pronounced trih-kuh-muh-nye-uh-sus), also called "trick," is a sexually transmitted disease (STD). It is caused by a single-celled protozoan parasite Trichomonas vaginalis . The parasite that causes the infection, trichomonas vaginalis , lives in the urogenital tract of males and females and can infect any sexually active person. But most infections occur when sexually active people have multiple sexual partners and are not using protection. This infection is usually treated with antibiotics. Although not life-threatening, a trichomoniasis infection can be uncomfortable, and can make a teen more susceptible to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the virus that causes acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). The only way anyone to completely prevent infection is to abstain from sex. If your teen is sexually active, it's important for him or her to understand the importance of always using a latex condom. It's the only birth control method that will help prevent trichomoniasis. It's also important that sexually active teens have pelvic or testicular exams - which can include screening for STDs - on a regular basis.

Trichomoniasis is mainly transmitted by sexual intercourse. It may also be passed on from a towel recently used by someone infected, or by contaminated water splashing from a toilet: such transmission is believed to be rare.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Trichomoniasis

The diagnosis of trichomoniasis is confirmed by microscopic exami nation of the discharge in a drop of saline. The appearance and movements of T.vaginalis are unmistakable.

  • To treat this type of vaginitis, you need to pinpoint the source of the irritation and avoid it. Possible sources include new soap, laundry detergent, sanitary napkins or tampons.
  • Antibiotics.
  • Your doctor may prescribe metronidazole (Flagyl) tablets.
  • Estrogen, in the form of vaginal creams, tablets or rings, can effectively treat atrophic vaginitis. This treatment is available by prescription from your doctor.
  • For this type of vaginitis, your doctor may prescribe metronidazole (Flagyl, MetroGel) or clindamycin (Cleocin) as tablets or vaginal gels or creams.

Treatment is usually with a single dose of antibiotics (although more is sometimes recom mended). Symptoms usually disappear within a day or two. Any sexual partner should be treated at the same time, even if he or she has no symptoms.
