Toxaemia - Toxaemia symptom, treatment, causes
Toxaemia occurs due to the presence in the blood of toxins produced by bacteria. The toxaemia may be part of SEPTICAEMIA (blood-poisoning) or may result from absorption into the blood of toxins produced by localised bacterial infection. for example in DIPHTHERIA, TETANUS and TOXIC SHOCK SYNDROME. Toxaemia is treated by intensive care nursing, appropriate antibiotics, antitoxin if available, and removal of any localised source of infection (for example, a tampon or dressing responsible for toxic shock syndrome).
Toxaemia of pregnancy, the old name for PREGGNANCY-INDUCED HYPERTENSION, is not associated with bacterial infection or the presence of any identifiable toxin in the blood.
