Home :: Family Health :: Toenail Ingrown Toenail Ingrown - Toenail Ingrown symptom, treatment, causesToenail Ingrown is a painful condition that results when the edgeof a nail cuts into the soft tissue under the fold along its side, leading to inflammation and often infection. The big toe is most often affected. Ingrowing toenails are caused either by tight shoes that press the nail into the tissue, or by cutting or tearing the nail too far down at the sides. An ingrown toenail is a toenail with an edge that pushes into the skin and soft tissue at the side of the nail. Symptoms include pain, redness, and swelling around the toenail. Your big toe is most likely to be affected, either on one or sometimes both sides. Your toenail curves and cuts into your skin causing your toe to be tender, especially when you walk on it. If left untreated, the inflammation can spread to the rest of your toe and the area becomes infected and may ooze pus. It may smell unpleasant. An ingrown toenail is a condition that is caused by abnormal growth of both the toenail and the surrounding tissues. The irritation from the toenail causes swelling of the tissues, and further inflammation. If ingrown toenail occurs when part of the nail penetrates the skin, which can often result in an infection. The ingrown nail can also apply pressure in the nail fold area without penetrating the skin - this is not technically an ingrown toe nail, but can also be painful (a corn callus is also common down the side of the nail and is a reaction to this pressure, rather than the nail actually penetrating the skin). Relief of the Toenail IngrownYou can stop an ingrown toenail from cutting into the skin by making a thin string from twisted cotton-wool strands and pushing it under the side edge of the tip of the nail when it is soft This could be after soaking your foot in warm, salty water for about 10 minutes, or after a bath or shower. The string should be moistened with iodine tincture daily until the nail grows out,but this will only take 3 or 4 days. If there is any red' ness, swelling or pus at the side of the nail, see your doctor. Prevention of the Toenail IngrownWhen you are trimming your toenails, always cut the nail straight across - not in a curve - and do not trim too close to the quick. If you need to clean the groove between the nail and the fold alongside it, do it gently with anorange stick. Gc through your shoes and discard any that press too tightly on your toes. If ingrowing toenails recur. see your doctor or a podiatrist Causes of Toenail IngrownThe common Causes of Toenail Ingrown :
