Sarcoidosis - Sarcoidosis symptom, treatment, causes

Sarcoidosis is an uncommon disease in which small, inflamed lumps form in various organs and tissues - particularly the lungs, lymph glands, liver, skin and eyes, and less often the spleen, joints, bones, muscles, heart and brain. The cause is unknown. Sarcoidosis occurs most often between the ages of 20 and 40.

Sarcoidosis (say "sar-coy-doe-sis") is a disease that may affect any organ or system in the body. It can appear in almost any body organ, but most often starts in the lungs or lymph nodes. Some people have signs and symptoms related to a specific organ, such as shortness of breath from lung problems, but others may have only a vague feeling of illness or no signs or symptoms at all. Although anyone can develop sarcoidosis, the disease mainly affects adults between the ages of 20 and 40.  It's more common in women than in men. In the United States, it occurs more often in blacks than in whites. Sarcoidosis is not contagious. This means you can't catch sarcoidosis from another person who has the disease.

Sarcoidosis is a multisystem granulomatous disease. The lung is the most common organ involved with sarcoidosis. These collections of cells are most often found in the lungs, but granulomas may also form in the lymph nodes, lungs, liver, eyes and skin. More rarely, they can form in the spleen, bones, joints, skeletal muscles, kidneys, heart and nervous system. Sarcoidosis can also cause generalized body symptoms such as fever, weight loss, night sweats, and fatigue. Granulomas in the lungs can lead to narrowing of the airways and inflammation and scarring (fibrosis) of lung tissue.

Causes of Sarcoidosis

The common Causes of Sarcoidosis :

  • An inherited or genetic factor .
  • Genetic predisposition (suggested by a slightly higher incidence of sarcoidosis within the same family)
  • Viral/bacterial infection.
  • An unknown environmental cause.
  • A defect in body immune system.
  • Hypersensitivity response (possibly from T.cell imbalance) to such agents as atypical mycobacteria, fungi, and pine pollen.
  • Chemicals, such as zirconium and beryllium, that can lead to illnesses resembling sarcoidosis, suggesting an extrinsic cause for this disease.

Symptoms of Sarcoidosis

Symptoms depend on the site and extent of the lumps and may be absent, mild or severe, Common symptoms include fever, weight loss, enlarged lymph glands, joint pains and weakness. With lung involvement there may be coughing and breathing difficulty. Sarcoidosis in the conjunctiva (the membrane that covers the white of the eye and lines the eyelids) causes painful, bloodshot eyes, Rashes on the face and purplish red lumps on the legs (ERYTHEMA NODOSUM) may develop. Some common Symptoms of Sarcoidosis :

  • Shortness of breath.
  • Myositis.
  • Loss of apetite.
  • Eye problems.
  • Cough.
  • Headache.
  • Arthritis .
  • Chills and night sweats.
  • Lung problems.
  • Fatigue .
  • Dry mouth.

Treatment of Sarcoidosis

  • Glucocorticoids, NSAIDs/salicylates, colchicine, hydroxychloroquine. Methotrexate, azathioprine and cyclosporine are being tested .
  • Higher risk of infection .
  • Diabetes.
