Home :: Family Health :: Salpingitis Salpingitis - Salpingitis symptom, treatment, causesInflammation, usually due to infecction: of one or both of the fallopian tubes. The infection often also involves the ovaries and uterus, in, which case it is known as PELVIC INFLAMMATORY DISEASE. Salpingitis may be caused by sexually transmitted
infections or may follow childbirth or abortion, Salpingitis is an inflammation of the fallopian tube(s). The fallopian tubes extend from the uterus, one on each side, and both open near an ovary. They are about 10 cm (4 inches) long, and at the inner end they connect with the inside of the womb. The outer end is free, but very close to the ovary on each side. The outer end actually looks very much like an open sea anemone, with fine tentacles, whose job it is to pick up the egg. These tentacles are called fimbriae. The tube gets narrower, the closer it gets to the womb. The widest part is about the width of a pencil, while the narrowest is almost as small as a pencil point. The sperms swim up through the womb and along the tube. One of the them fertilizes the egg ant the outer end. The fertilized egg then travels back down the tube and into the womb. The tube is lined by cells, which help the egg on this journey. Salpingitis nearly always affects both tubes. The symptoms of salpingitis and their severity can vary a great deal. An acute and bad infection causes severe lower abdominal pain. There may be peritonitis (inflammation of the lining of the abdomen). There is a high fever, the patient may vomit and be unable to keep down food and fluids. The symptoms are due to the presence of pus in the tubes, like a large abscess. Hospital treatment is then essential. However, many cases are not as severe as this, and do not justify hospital admission. There is lower abdominal pain, particularly during intercourse. There may be a vaginal discharge, and in chronic cases, the periods become heavy and more painful. Causes of SalpingitisThe common Causes of Salpingitis :
Symptoms of SalpingitisIn acute salpingitis the most prominent symptoms are severe lower abdominal pain and fever. The pain is aggravated by coughing, sneezing, and moving the bowels. Chronic salpingitis causes less severe symptoms, including recurrent lower abdominal or back pain, pain with sexual intercourse or bowel movement, intermittent bouts of mild or moderate fever, heavier bleeding and increased pain with periods, and a bad-smelling vaginal discharge. Some common Symptoms of Salpingitis :
Treatment of SalpingitisThe diagnosis is usually evidenf from the symptoms and signs but, if there is any doubt, laparoscopy (examination via a viewing instrument of organs within the abdomen and pelvis) may be needed to differentiate salpingitis from APPENDICITIS or ECTOPIC PREGNANCY (pregnancy developing outside the uterus). The bac-teriaresponsible can be identified from swabs taken from the cervix or through the laparoscope. Treatment in hospital is often advised, so that intravenous antibiotics can be used to overcome the infection as quickly as possible. Preventing complications is a prime consideration. After the infection has settled. surgery may be needed to drain pyosalpinx or hydrosalpillx or to remove the tube Wit is damaged beyond recovery.
