Restless Legs Syndrome is a condition in which unpleasant sensations in the legs that are relieved by movement, so that sufferers find it very un comfortable to sit or lie still. The sensations are described as 'creeping', 'crawling', 'pulling' and 'tin gling'. Restless legs syndrome (RIS) affects abouts per cent of the population, most commonly beginning in middle age. It is sometimes associated with a condition called periodic limb movement disorder, in which jerky movements of the legs occur during sleep. The cause of these disorders is unknown. The diagnosis is made when all other causes of abnormal limb sensations and move ments have been excluded. There is no cure, but muscle relaxants or levodopa (a drug that helps to control tremor in Parkinson's disease) may help if symptoms disrupt lifestyle or sleep.

Causes of Restless Legs Syndrome

The common Causes of Restless Legs Syndrome :

  • The cause of RLS is still unknown.
  • Psychiatric factors, stress, and fatigue can exacerbate symptoms of RLS.
  • RLS symptoms occur in 25-50% of patients with iron deficiency.
  • In most cases, RLS is an idiopathic CNS disorder. Such idiopathic disease can be familial in 25-75% of cases. In the familial cases, it appears to follow a pattern of autosomal dominant inheritance.
