Although ovarian cancer is much less common than cancer of the cervix or endometrium (Jining of the uterus), it causes more deaths than any other reproductive system cancer. It is the fourth most common cause of cancer death in Australian women, after breast, lung and large bowel. Ovarian cancer is particularly malignant because it develops rapidly and spreads early and widely, often before it has caused any symptoms and when the ovaries are not noticeably enlarged. It is more common in women over 40, and mostly occurs after the meno-pause. There is no screening test, and no particular group of women to be watched. Ovarian cancer is a disease in which normal ovarian cells begin to grow in an uncontrolled, abnormal manner and produce tumors in one or both ovaries. The risk of ovarian cancer increases with age. Women over the age of 60 have the highest incidence. Women who have never given birth are twice as likely to develop ovarian cancer as those who have. Early pregnancy and menopause and the use of oral contraceptives seem to offer protection against ovarian cancer. Other symptoms may include vague, unexplained digestive disturbances. Treatment is altered according to the stage of the disease and consists of varying combinations of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. Drugs useful in treating ovarian cancer include chlorambucil, melphalan, cyclophosphamide, cisplatin, and paclitaxel (Taxol).
