Osteoma - Osteoma symptom, treatment, causes

Osteoma is a condition in which benign bone tumour that can occur in any bone. Osteomas are usually small and hard, and require no treatment unless they cause symptoms by pres sure on nearby structures, making surgical removal necessary

An osteoma (plural: "osteomata") is due to a new piece of bone usually growing on another piece of bone, typically the skull . It is a benign tumor . Osteoma may occur in any part of any bone, but is most frequent in the legs, especially the femur. Osteoid osteomas are very small tumors that do not grow larger that half an inch in diameter. They usually emerge sometime during the teenage years or early adulthood. The condition seems to occur more often in males than females. These tumors, while causing painful symptoms, typically do not progress or harm the host bone, although in young children, those located near a growth plate, may deform the host bone, or stimulate the bone to grow larger or longer. They do not, however, metastasize (spread) beyond the bone. If located near a joint, they may be associated with swelling or fluid in the joint.

An osteoid osteoma is a benign, bone-forming tumor that occurs most often in the long bones of the lower extremities. These tumors are very slow growing but can cause symptoms by pushing on adjacent structures or obstructing the nasal passages.  Symptoms often include facial pain and headaches.  The treatment of choice is surgery and complete removal is usually curative. Choroidal osteoma can grow within the eye. These bone-like tumors arise within the blood-vessel layer "choroid" beneath the retina. Choroidal osteoma are usually found near the optic nerve and can cause vision loss. The choroidal osteoma impedes the circulation to (and harms) the overlying retina and can be associated with adjacent subretinal neovascularization.
