Nephritis is an inflammation of one or both kidneys, which may be acute or chronic. Nephritis may result from infection, abnormal immune reactions [as in GLOMERULO-NEPHRITIS), AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE (in which the immune system produces antibodies that attack one or more of the body's own tissues), certain poisons and drugs, and metabolic disorders (involving disturbance of the body's chemical balance) such as GOlIT. The main symptoms of nephritis are reduced urine output. smoky or bloody urine, varying degrees of OEDEMA (excessive fluid in tissues), and often loin pain. Treatment is that of the underlying cause
