Naevus - Naevus symptom, treatment, causes

Naevus can be described as the any permanent skin blemish that is clearly marked off from surrounding skin. A naevus may be present at birth, in which case it is called a BIRTH-MARK, or it may develop at any age. It may be coloured or not coloured; flat, raised or on a stalk; with hair or without it: There are two main types of naevi.

  • vascular naevi are abnormal collections of blood vessels (termed haemangiomas) beneath the surface layer of the skin. Many types are present as birthmarks.
  • Pigmented naevi are caused by localised overactivity of cells producing brown or black pigment Pigmented birthmarks are generally flat, pale brown and irregular in shape. Moles are pigmented naevi that are round or oval, often slightly raised or attached to the skin by a stalk; they may sometimes be more hairy than surrounding skin. Moles are unusual in newborn babies, but often develop during childhood, puberty or pregnancy. The average adult has about 15 moles.

Naevi are generally harmless, but may need treatment or removal for cosmetic reasons or because they are irritated by clothing. Moles should be protected from sunlight and watched for any warning signs of the development of a melanoma
