Immunodeficiency - Immunodeficiency symptom, treatment, causes

Immunodeficiency Reducis due to the deficieny in ability of the body's immune system to fight infection and cancer. Immunodeficiency may be congenital or acquired.

  1. Congenital immunodeficiency is uncommon and results from inborn defects in the production of two types of white blood cells. These are B lymphocytes - involved in production of the GAMMA GLOBULINS that form antibodies -and/ or the T lymphocytes, which help to fight infection and cancer.
  2. Acquired immunodeficiency can result from a disease such as AIDS, chronic debilitating ill-ness severe malnutrition, serious emotional disturbance and some types of cancer, or from suppression of the immune system by IMMUNO-SUPPRESSANTDRUGS. The immune system also becomes less efficient with age.
  3. People with severe immunodeficiency are highly susceptible to all kinds of infections, including many that seldom cause illness in healthy people. They are also prone to developing cancer, which is more likely to spread rapidly and widely.

Immunodeficiency disorders occur when the immune response is reduced or absent. Immunodeficiency disorders may affect any part of the immune system. People with severe immunodeficiency are highly susceptible to all kinds of infections, including many that seldom cause illness in healthy people. They are also prone to developing cancer, which is more likely to spread rapidly and widely. Primary immunodeficiency is caused by defective genes that control the development and function of the immune system, usually resulting in frequent, serious infections in childhood or early adult life. Immunodeficiency causes persistent or recurrent infections, severe infections by organisms that are normally mild, incomplete recovery from illness or poor response to treatment, and an increased incidence of cancer and other tumors. Opportunistic infections are widespread infections by microorganisms that are usually controllable. Acquired immunodeficiency may be a complication of diseases such as HIV infection and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. Malnutrition, particularly with lack of protein, and many cancers, may also cause immunodeficiency. The goal of treatment for immunodeficiency disorders includes protection against (and treatment of) diseases and infections. Immunocompromised patients should avoid contact with persons who have infections or contagious disorders.

Causes of Immunodeficiency

The common causes and risk factor's of Immunodeficiency include the following:

  • Defective genes that control the development and function of the immune system.
  • Malnutrition, particularly with lack of protein, and many cancers, may also cause immunodeficiency.
  • Patients with diabetes are also at higher risk.
  • A family history of primary immunodeficiency.
  • Use of certain drugs called immunosuppressants.

Symptoms of Immunodeficiency

Some sign and symptoms related to Immunodeficiency are as follows:

  • Skin rashes.
  • Sometimes, a red inflammation of the lining of the eye ( conjunctivitis ) is present.
  • Weight lose.
  • Skin infections by bacteria or viruses are also common.

Treatment of Immunodeficiency

Here is list of the methods for treating Immunodeficiency:

  • Any illness or infection is treated aggressively in patients with immunosuppression. This may involve prolonged use of antimicrobials (antibiotics, antifungal medications), use of powerful antimicrobials to treat any infection, and preventive treatments.
  • Bone marrow transplant may be used to treat certain immunodeficiency conditions.
  • Passive immunity (administration of antibodies produced by another person or animal) may occasionally be recommended to prevent illness after exposure to a microorganism.
  • An influenza vaccine given once a year is recommended for people who can produce antibodies and for their immediate family members.
