Iatrogenic is a term describing health disorders that result from medical treatment. An example is postural hypotension, a sudden fall in blood pressure on getting up from lying or sitting that can be a side effect of medications used to treat depression or high blood pressure. The existence of iatrogenic disorders does notnecessarily imply lack of knowledge or care on the part of health care personnel: most medical treatment carries some risk of adverse effects and it must often be decided whether to accept the possibility or forgo treatment.

Some medical conditions are obviously iatrogenic in nature, such as a physician who inadvertently uses a medical remedy to which the patient is allergic or administers an erroneous medication dose. Furthermore, patients who are treated at a medical facility may become inflicted with a nosocomial infection. From a sociological point of view there are three types of iatrogenesis: clinical iatrogenesis, social iatrogenesis, and cultural iatrogenesis.
