Hearing Aids – A 5 Step Guide to Maintenance and Cleaning
Hearing aids may be a marvel of modern technology, but they will only stay in tip-top working order with some regularcare and attention. If you’re interested in learning about high quality hearing aid batteries and accessories visit Amplifon.co.uk.
Here are 5 ways to give your hearing aids the love and care they deserve:
1. Getting the most from your batteries.
There is a wide choice of hearing aids on the market but they all rely on battery power. So, bearing this in mind, it is important to get the most from your batteries.
It’s always a good idea to have a few spare batteries in a safe place as they have the unfortunate habit of going flat at the most inopportune of times! And also make a point of turning-off your hearing aid before going to bed at night.
2. Store your hearing aids in a safe place.
Just like many other types of electrical equipment, keep your hearing aids away from direct sunlight or cold and damp conditions.Hearing aids contain a lot of very small components and when not in your ears they should be kept in a suitable environment (i.e. clean, dry and free of moisture). If they came with a case try to make use of it.
3. Keeping your hearing aids clean.
Not only is cleaning important on a hygiene level, but it will often extend the lifespan of your hearing aids.
If your hearing aid has attracted any moisture during the day, then there are special cases, lined with desiccant materials, which will help to remove this during the night.
The part of the hearing aid that fits within the ear canal should be wiped over carefully with a soft tissue or lint-free cloth. Next, use a wire loop and a small brush (normally supplied with your device) to remove any earwax from the tubing and the actual opening on the hearing aid itself.
If your hearing aid fits behind your ear with a tube into your ear, then you will need to wash this part (the earmould) very carefully with warm soapy water (but don’t get any other components wet).
4. Keep your contacts clean.
Dirty or corroded battery contacts may result in an intermittent fault and they can even cause your hearing aid to stop working altogether. However, some delicate scraping with a small, sharp tool will normally solve this problem.
Corroded contacts will normally only come about if old batteries are left in your device for prolonged periods, so avoid doing this at all costs!
5. Things to keep your hearing aids away from.
If you are cleaning your hearing aids, then it is never a good idea to use solvent or alcohol-based solutions as these can cause irreversible damage.
It is also worth mentioning that hairspray may well have a detrimental effecton hearing aids. So if you do need to use this on your hair, then make a point of removing your hearing aid first.
