Haemolysis - Haemolysis symptom, treatment, causes

Normal haemolysis is the breakdown of worn-out red blood cells. Red cells normally survive for about 120 days and are then destroyed, mainly in the spleen. The iron from their haemoglobin (the oxygen-carrying pigment in red cells) is recycled in making haemoglobin for new red cells. A waste product of haemolysis is bilirubin (bile pigment), which is left over after the iron is saved from haemoglobin and is excreted by the liver into the bile. Abnormal haemolysis is the excessive and premature destruction of red cells, which can lead to JAUNDICE and ANAEMIA

Haemolysis is the breaking open of red blood cells and the release of hemoglobin into the surrounding fluid. It may be intravascular or extravascular. Haemolysis may be caused by defects in the red cell (intrinsic) or defects elsewhere in the body (extrinsic). Hemolysis may occur if the centrifuge rotates too quickly (generally greater than 500 rpms) - essentially this is hemolysis occurring outside of the body. Unfortunately, increased hemolysis occurs with massive amounts of sudden blood loss, because the process of returning patient's cells must be done at a correspondingly higher speed to prevent hypotension, pH imbalance, and a number of other hemodynamic & blood level factors. A waste product of haemolysis is bilirubin, which is left over after the iron is saved from haemoglobin and is excreted by the liver into the bile. Abnormal haemolysis is the excessive and premature destruction of red cells, which can lead to jaudice and anaemia. Haemolysis can lead to changes of a specific parameter in the test material. It is called a biological influence factor if the release of the blood-cell constituents took place in vivo. Conditions that can cause hemolysis include antigen-antibody reactions, toxins and poisons, and treatments such as hemodialysis or the use of the heart-lung bypass machine.

Causes of Haemolysis

The common causes and risk factor's of Haemolysis include the following:

  • Treatments such as hemodialysis.
  • Use of the heart-lung bypass machine.
  • Toxins and poisons.
  • Antigen-antibody reactions.
