Fibrosis - Fibrosis symptom, treatment, causes

Fibrosis is due to the overgrowth of fibrous tissue. This is the connective tissue that surrounds all body structures and holds them together, and normally repairs any breaches (for example.by injury or surgery) except in bone or nervous tissue. Fibrosis occurs after tissues such as muscles and the kidneys, lungs and liver are damaged or destroyed by inflammation, injury or disturbed blood supply. The .specialised cells of these tissues cannot regenerate, and fibrous tissue replaces any that are lost. CIRRHOSIS OF THE LIVER is an example. because fibrous tissue contracts with time, fibrosis.may cause further loss of function by compressing, the surviving cells in the affected part.

Fibrosis is the formation of fine scar-like structures within tissues affected by lymphedema that causes them to harden. The term fibrosis is also used to describe the scarring caused by radiation burns. There are two main types of fibrosis: Pulmonary fibrosis and Cystic fibrosis. Pulmonary fibrosis involves scarring of the lung. Pulmonary fibrosis, which is lung fibrosis from unknown causes. Common symptoms include shortness of breath, a chronic dry cough, fatigue, weakness, chest discomfort, loss of appetite, and rapid weight loss. It usually affects people between the ages of 40 and 70, and men and women are equally affected. There are currently no effective treatments or a cure for Pulmonary fibrosis. Supplemental oxygen improves the quality of life and exercise capacity. Single lung transplant may be considered for some patients. Cystic fibrosis is an inherited disease of your mucus and sweat glands. It affects mostly your lungs, pancreas, liver, intestines, sinuses, and sex organs. Symptoms sometimes include abnormal heart rhythms, malnutrition, poor growth, frequent respiratory infections, and breathing difficulties. Cystic Fibrosis can also cause other medical problems including sinusitis, nasal polyps, hemoptysis, abdominal pain and discomfort, gassiness, and rectal prolapse. It primarily affects the respiratory and digestive systems in children and young adults. There is no cure for cystic fibrosis and the disease generally gets worse over time. While there is no effective treatment currenlty available for fibrosis, there are many drugs being tested all the time, so perhaps the cure is not far away.

Causes of Fibrosis

The common causes and risk factor's of Fibrosis include the following:

  • A single faulty gene that controls the movement of salt in the body.
  • An imbalance of essential fatty acids.
  • Occupational and environmental exposures to asbestos or metal dusts, organic substances or fumes.
  • Cigarette Smoking.
  • Exposure to environmental pollutants.

Symptoms of Fibrosis

Some sign and symptoms related to Fibrosis are as follows:

  • Shortness of breath.
  • Foul-smelling, greasy stools.
  • Excessive appetite.
  • Blockage in the bowels.
  • Delayed growth.
  • Coughing or wheezing.

Treatment of Fibrosis

Here is list of the methods for treating Fibrosis:

  • Most people with fibrosis have ongoing, low-grade lung infections. Sometimes, these infections become so serious that you may need to be hospitalized. Antibiotics are the primary treatment.
  • Physcal therapy to help drain the lungs of thick mucus is often used to help the patients live as normal life as they possibly can.
  • Inhaled antibiotics, such as tobramycin. They may be used alone or with oral antibiotics.
  • Use of medications such as albuterol (Proventil, Ventolin) may help keep open the bronchial tubes by clearing thick secretions.
  • Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) may slow lung deterioration in some children with cystic fibrosis.
  • A well-balanced, high-caloric diet, low in fat and high in protein, and pancreatic enzymes (which help digestion) are often prescribed.
