Fibroma - Fibroma symptom, treatment, causes

A benign tumour resulting from localised over growth of fibrous tissue in parts of the body as muscles, skin and fat. Fibromas are firm, usually round or oval and not tender, and they generally remain small and cause no problems. Occasion a fibroma may need to be removed because it grows large enough to become unsightly. causes symptoms by pressing on nerves, or encroaches nearby organs or tissues.

Fibromas, also known as fibroid tumors or fibroids, are benign tumors that are composed of fibrous or connective tissue. Fibromas are conspicuous as firm, nodular masses fastened only to the skin and varying in diameter from 10 to more than 100mm. All are fleshy. Some are covered with gray or dark skin which often is scratched and bleeding. Others have a black, dry, hard surface that may be fissured much like the head of a cauliflower. There are many types of fibroma. The hard fibroma consists of many fibres and few cells, e.g. in skin it is called dermatofibroma, in skin there also might be histiocytomes, which contain more cells. The soft fibroma or fibroma with a shaft (acrochordon, skin tag, fibroma pendulans) consist of many loosely connected cells and less fibroid tissue. It mostly appears at the neck, armpits or groins. Fibromas can grow in all organs, arising from mesenchyme tissue. Fibromas can be experimentally transmitted by rubbing fibroma tissue onto the scratched skin. The cemento-ossifying fibroma is hard and fibrous, most frequently seen in the jaw or mouth, sometimes in connection with a fracture or another type of injury. The diagnosis can be confirmed by skin biopsy . The appearance under the microscope is characteristic, showing interlaced spindle-shaped cells and collagen fibres within the dermis and subcutaneous tissue (under the skin).
