Fibroadenoma - Fibroadenoma symptom, treatment, causes

A benign tumour consisting of a mixture of fibrous and gland tissues. Fibroadenomas are common in the breasts of women under 35, where they form firm, movable, round or oval lumps that are not tender. Multiple fibroadenomas may be found in one or both breasts. Breast fibroadenomas are not removed unless they cause symptoms or there is worry about cancer but, as with all breast lumps, their benign nature should be confirmed by biopsy.

A fibroadenoma is a firm, noncancerous tumor of a gland, often found in the breast during a breast self-exam. The cause of fibroadenoma is not known. A Fibroadenoma is typically not cancerous. Fibroadenomas are solid, smooth, firm, benign lumps that are commonly found in women in their late teens and early 20s. Black women tend to develop fibroadenomas more frequently and at an earlier age than white women. They are the most common benign lumps that occur in women and can occur in women of any age. Fibroadenomas usually cause no symptoms and may be discovered during breast self-examination, or during a routine check-up. A fibroadenoma will not disappear by itself and is not known to be related to any particular diet or medical condition. The anteroposterior diameter of a fibroadenoma is usually smaller than the transverse diameter. A fibroadenoma is diagnosed through mammogram, physical exam, fine-needle aspiration and, at times, a biopsy. On a mammogram, a fibroadenoma appears as an oval-shaped, well-defined lump with a smooth surface. Fibroadenomas are more common in younger women and may become tender in the days before a period or grow bigger during pregnancy. Women have a choice about whether to have their fibroadenoma removed, but if it is monitored and continues to enlarge, it should be removed. Alternative treatments for fibroadenomas include a low-fat, high-fiber, vegetarian-type diet; a reduction in caffeine intake; supplementation with evening primrose oil, flax oil, or fish oil and vitamins E and C; and the application of hot compresses to the breast.
