Fatigue is a feeling of extreme tiredness and lack of energy. Fatigue is most commonly the result of strenuous activity or lack of sleep, and energy is usually restored by rest. Tiredness can also be caused by emotional distress. However, unexplained fatigue may be a warning sign of oncoming illness such as a viral infection, or may be a symptom of serious disorders such as ANAEMIA.DIABETES MElLITUS, heart disease, kidney disease or cancer. Anyone who persistently feels tired for no apparent reason should consult a doctor. Fatigue is a feeling of weariness, tiredness, or lack of energy. There are two main types of fatigue: Central and Peripheral. Fatigue is common. Around 20% of Americans claim to have fatigue intense enough to interfere with their having a normal life. A person suffering from fatigue has slowed reflexes and reduced function in daily life. Excessive tiredness is also a known risk factor in motor vehicle and workplace accidents. Fatigue is different from drowsiness. In general, drowsiness is feeling the need to sleep, while fatigue is a lack of energy and motivation. Drowsiness and apathy (a feeling of indifference or not caring about what happens) can be symptoms of fatigue. Fatigue is not the same as drowsiness, but the desire to sleep may accompany fatigue. Apathy is a feeling of indifference that may accompany fatigue or exist independently. Fatigue is also common when you are feeling down. Fatigue can also be caused by a wide range of illnesses and diseases. In such cases, a person usually finds they suddenly (or even gradually) need more rest and sleep. This may affect their performance at work. Fatigue can significantly interfere with a person's ability to function at home and at work, and may be the most prominent symptom in a person who otherwise has minimal activity limitations. Fatigue is a most important cause of early departure from the workforce. Fatigue can be an early symptom of many types of serious illness, although usually it's not. Fatigue is common up to 1 month after a viral illness. Because fatigue is a common complaint, sometimes a potentially serious cause may be overlooked. Fatigue can sometimes be caused by prescriptions or other medications you are taking. Over-the-counter medications that can rob you of energy include pain relievers, cough and cold medicines, antihistamines and allergy medicines, sleeping pills, and motion sickness pills. Fatigue can be a normal and important response to physical exertion, emotional stress, boredom, or lack of sleep. However, it can also be a nonspecific sign of a more serious psychological or physical disorder. People often return to their busy lifestyles after the obvious symptoms go away and do not realize their body is still recuperating. When fatigue is not relieved by enough sleep, good nutrition, or a low-stress environment, it should be evaluated by your doctor. Several different kinds of fatigue occur in patients with MS. For example, patients who have bladder dysfunction (producing night-time awakenings) or patients with nocturnal spasms, may be sleep deprived and suffer from fatigue as a result. Patients who are depressed may also suffer fatigue. Vitamins and minerals are necessary for many of the body's processes, and a healthy diet ensures your body can function at its best.
