The heart has its own pacemaker called the SinoAtrial (SA)
node which lies inside the right atrium.
Electrical activity originates here and spreads to the AV
(Atrio Ventricular) node. The AV node slows the electrical
impulse and from here, a special band of heart muscle,
(the bundle ofHis) conveys electrical impulsis across the heart.
- The heart's pacemaker and conducting system are controlled
by the Autonomic Nervous System.
- Sinus bradycardia is a slow arrhythmia caused by a problem
in the SA node.
- A heart block is a slow arrhythmia caused by a failure of the
electrical impulse to pass from the upper to the lower chambers
of the heart.
- Asystole or cardiac arrest is a stoppage of the electrical activity
of the heart.
- Atrial flutter and atrial fibrillation are fast arrhythmias that
originate in the atrium.
- Atrial fibrillation leads to ineffective emptying of the atria
and carries a risk of clot formation. It places the person at
a high risk of developing a stroke.
- Arrhythmias can be treated with anti-arrhythmic drugs.
- Heartblock may require a pacemaker.
Atrial flutter is more common in men . Atrial flutter is an abnormality in the beating of the heart .. When the heart ""beats,'' the atria push blood into the ventricles and the ventricles push blood out of the heart. the atria and ventricles work at the same time. But in people with the condition called atrial flutter, the atria ""beat'' more often than the ventricles. This means that the atria have a shorter time to push all of their blood into the ventricles; and because of this, the ventricles may not fill up with enough blood. The body, then, may not get enough oxygen-rich blood. Atrial Fibrillation is a common heart rhythm. Atrial flutter is much less common than atrial fibrillation. Atrial flutter occurs when an abnormal conduction circuit develops inside the right atrium .Atrial flutter can come and go; it is then known as paroxysmal atrial flutter . atrial flutter is more or less permanent and is known as persistent atrial flutter.
