Angioedema is an allergic response of swelling and redness.
Is similar to urticaria, but affects the deeper tissues as well.
It causes considerably greater swelling.
When it occurs in the larynx or epiglottis, Angioedema can obstruct the
airway and become life-threatening.
Angioedema Treatment is with anti-histaminics, and when indicated,
steroids.
Angioedema should be viewed as varying manifestations of the same pathologic process. Angioedema also known by its eponym . angioneurotic, is the rapid swelling of the skin , mucosa and submucosal tissues. There are two basic types of angioedema .Hereditary angioedema orAcquired angioedema. Angioedema and urticaria viewed as varying manifestations of the same pathologic process . a small minority of people with angioedema get these dangerous features. An old and misleading name for angioedema is 'angioneurotic oedema. Angioedema is an at best an uncomfortable and disfiguring type of temporary swelling.angioedema is life-threatening if swelling in your mouth or throat makes it difficult for you to breathe. this condition has moved out of your blood circulation that your blood pressure drops dangerously. Small blood vessels deep in your skin or gut leak watery liquid through their walls.
Symptoms of Angioedema:
Common symptoms of angioedema include:
Burning, painful, swollen areas; usually not itchy; often affects eyelids, lips, tongue, throat, palms, soles, or genitalia
Hoarseness, tight or swollen throat, breathing trouble
Discolored patches or rash on the hands, feet, face, or genitals
Vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and reduced appetite
Swelling in or around the eyes
There may also be slightly decreased sensation in the affected areas due to compression of the nerves
inspiratory breath sounds and decreasing oxygen levels.
Causes of Angioedema
Some causes of Angioedema include:
- Infections such as viral illnesses
- Allergies to food, medications, cosmetics, soaps, and detergents
- Insect stings and bites
- Transfusions of blood
- Emotional and physical stress
- Dermatographism. The name of this condition literally means "write on the skin." When pressure is applied to the skin or the skin is scratched, raised lines appear on those areas due to histamine-based angioedema that leads to swelling beneath the skin
Treatment of Angioedema
- Antihistamines and other related treatments are of limited benefit in hereditary angioedema.
- Attenuated androgens, which are derivatives of normal sex hormones, can reduce the frequency and severity of attacks.
- Once an attack occurs, treatment includes pain relief and fluids given by an intravenous line.
- You may need adrenaline inhalers or injections if you have swelling in your mouth
- Certain foods and food additives may trigger angioedema in people who are susceptible for example: eafood ,Nuts Legumes,Eggs ,Chocolate ,Milk and Berries.
