Alkalosis - Alkalosis symptom, treatment, causes

Alkalosis is a disturbance of the body's chemical balance in which blood and tissue fluids become too alkaline. Alkalosis may result from excessive loss of acid from the body. such as may occur in severe vomiting, diarrhoea or over use of drugs that increase urine production. It can also occur as a result of carbon dioxide levels in the blood becoming too low at high altitudes, in aspirin poisoning, or because of breathing more deeply and rapidly than is necessary (for example, at times of acute anxiety).

Alkalosis Symptom are irritability and muscular twitching, spasm and weakness. Alkalosis is treated by eliminating the underlying cause and by correcting the body's chemical balance with suitable fluids by mouth or intravenously, when overbreathing is the cause, rebreathing (supervised by a helper) into and out of a paper (not plastic) bag for about 6 breaths usually relieves symptoms quickly by restoring the carbon dioxide blood 1evel from exhaled air.

Metabolic alkalosis results from altered metabolism . Alkalosis is a condition of excess base in the body fluids. This is the opposite of excess acid and can be caused by many different conditions. Alkalosis develops when the body loses too much acid or gains too much base. For instance, loss of potassium sufficient to cause metabolic alkalosis may result from the use of diuretics or corticosteroids. This is the opposite of excess acid, and can be caused by many different conditions. Alkalosis is caused by an excess of bicarbonate in blood, high altitudes, hyperventilation , and excessive vomiting. Hypochloremic alkalosis is caused by an extreme lack or loss of chloride. During acute respiratory alkalosis, the person will lose consciousness where the rate of ventilation will resume to normal. The opposite of alkalosis is acidosis in which there is too low a pH due to excess acid or insufficient base in the body. In addition, metabolic alkalosis can develop when excessive loss of sodium or potassium affects the kidneys' ability to control the blood's acid-base balance.

Causes of Alkalosis

The common Causes of Alkalosis

  • Hyperventilation.
  • Decreased carbon dioxide.
  • Increased bicarbonate levels create an excessive alkaline state called alkalosis.
  • Loss of gastric secretions.
  • Milk alkali syndrome.
  • Massive blood transfusion.

Symptoms of Alkalosis

The common Symptoms of Alkalosis

  • Hand tremor.
  • Prolonged muscle spasms.
  • Dizziness. and numbness of the hands and feet.
  • Vomiting.
  • Numbness or tingling in the face or extremities.
  • Light-headedness.
  • Muscle weakness.

Treament of Alkalosis

  • Replacing water and electrolytes.
  • Occasionally, when metabolic alkalosis is very severe, dilute acid in the form of ammonium chloride is given intravenously.
  • Slowing down the rate of breathing.
  • The person to breathe rapidly, relieving the pain usually suffices.
  • Breathing into a paper bag may help raise the carbon dioxide level in the blood as the person breathes carbon dioxide back in after breathing it out.
