Adhesion - Adhesion symptom, treatment, causes
Fibrous tissue strands or bands joining two surfaces that are not usually connected. Adhesions may be the result of inflammation of the smooth internal membranes lining the body cavities (for example; PERITONITIS in the abdomen; PERICARDITIS around the heart; or PLEURISY around the lungs), or may form during the healing of a wound or surgical incision. Depending on the tissues involved, adhesions can cause various disorders. In the eye, adhesion of the iris to the lens can lead to glaucoma. In the intestines, adhesions can cause partial or complete bowel obstruction.
They often cause no problems but may restrict movement in effected areas (for example, pleural Adhesions may interfere with proper expansions of the lungs), trap a loop of bowel and create an obstruction, or create difficulties during future surgery in the same body cavity. Trublesome Adhesions are removed surgically with a minimum of tissue damage to reduce the risk of recurrence. Intrauterine adhesions occur often enough that they have a name of their own -- Asherman syndrome. Pelvic adhesions can lead to infertility and reproductive problems.
