Addiction is an overwhelming and uncontrollable craving for a substance (such as alcohol and certain drugs) or activity (such as gambling and exercise). Addiction prevents people leading normal lives: most of their energy becomes directed towards satisfying the craving, to the detriment of their health, work, and family and other interpersonal relationship. A drug addict may become so dependent on a substance that abstaining from it causes physical and mental illness (withdrawal symptom of Addiction).
