The pharmacology action of Lanthanum Carbonate is that it inhibits GI absorption of phosphate by forming highly insoluble lanthanum phosphate complex with dietary phosphate released from food during digestion

Interaction and Contraindication of Lanthanum Carbonate

Interaction of Lanthanum Carbonate - Compounds known to interact with antacids:  Do not take within 2 hr of lanthanum.

Side Effects o f Lanthanum Carbonate

Here are the list of some common side effects ofLanthanum Carbonate :

  • Hypotension (at least 5%).
  • Headache (at least 5%).
  • Rhinitis (at least 5%).
  • Abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting (at least 5%).
  • Hypercalcemia (at least 5%).
  • Dialysis graft occlusion or complication (at least 5%).

Precaution and Warning while taking Lanthanum Carbonate

The precaution and warnings of Lanthanum Carbonate drug is as follows:

  • Advise patient that medication does not replace diet changes and to continue to adhere to prescribed diet.
  • Advise patient that dose may be adjusted periodically in order to achieve maximum benefit.
  • Advise patient to take each dose with or immediately after a meal. Caution patient to chew tablets thoroughly before swallowing and not to swallow intact tablets.
  • Advise women to inform health care provider if pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
  • Instruct patient not to take any prescription or OTC medications, herbal preparations, or dietary supplements unless advised by health care provider.
  • Advise patient that follow-up examinations and lab tests will be required to monitor therapy and to keep appointments.

How to store Lanthanum Carbonate

  • Dose is individualized depending on serum phosphate level. Dose will be titrated q 2 to 3 wk until acceptable serum phosphate level is reached.
  • Have patient chew tablets completely before swallowing. Caution patient not to swallow intact tablets.
  • In order to bind dietary phosphate efficiently, administer prescribed dose with or immediately after a meal.
  • Administer lanthanum carbonate at least 2 hr before medication(s) known to interact with antacids (eg, fluoroquinolone antibiotics, ketoconazole).
  • Store tablets at controlled room temperature (59° to 86°F). Protect from moisture
