Ibandronate Sodium Information

The pharmacology action of Ibandronate Sodium is that it inhibits osteoclast activity and reduces bone resorption and turnover.

Ibandronate Sodium is used treatment and prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.

on coagulopathies (DIC); prevention of postoperative deep venous thrombosis (DVT), and PE.

Interaction and Contraindication of Ibandronate Sodium

Interaction of Ibandronate Sodium - Antacids, calcium supplements, products containing calcium, or other multivalent cations (eg, aluminum, magnesium, iron):  May interfere with absorption of ibandronate. Take ibandronate at least 60 min before any oral medication containing multivalent cations.
Aspirin, NSAIDs:  Possible additive GI side effects.

Contraindication of Ibandronate Sodium - Uncorrected hypocalcemia; inability to stand or sit upright for at least 60 min; hypersensitivity to any component of the product

Side Effects o f Ibandronate Sodium

Here are the list of some common side effects ofIbandronate Sodium :

  • Hypertension (7%).
  • Headache (7%); asthenia, dizziness (4%); vertigo (3%); insomnia, nerve root lesion (2%).
  • Rash (2%).
  • Nasopharyngitis (4%); pharyngitis (3%).
  • Dyspepsia (12%); abdominal pain (8%); diarrhea (7%); nausea (5%); constipation, tooth disorder (4%); vomiting (3%); gastritis (2%); dysphagia, esophageal and gastric ulcer, esophagitis (postmarketing).

Precaution and Warning while taking Ibandronate Sodium

The precaution and warnings of Ibandronate Sodium drug is as follows:

Advise patient to read Patient Information leaflet before starting therapy and to reread the leaflet each time the medication is renewed.

  • Instruct patient to take each dose with plain water first thing upon arising for the day, at least 60 min before the first food, beverage, medication, or supplement (including calcium and vitamins) of the day, and to remain in a standing or sitting position for at least 60 min.
  • Instruct patient to swallow tablet whole with a full glass (6 to 8 oz) of plain water. Caution patient not to chew or suck on tablet.
  • Caution patient not to take ibandronate with any liquid other than plain water. Advise patient that taking ibandronate with food, other medications, juices, mineral water, coffee, or any other beverage will reduce the absorption of ibandronate and reduce its effectiveness.
  • Advise patient taking ibandronate once a month (150 mg tablet) to take the tablet on the same date each month.
  • Advise patient taking ibandronate once a month that if the once-monthly dose is missed and the next scheduled dose is more than 7 days away, to take their ibandronate tablet in the morning after the date that it is remembered and then return to taking 1 ibandronate tablet in the morning of their chosen day, according to their original schedule.
  • Advise patient taking ibandronate once a month that if the once-monthly dose is missed, and the next scheduled dose is only 1 to 7 days away, to skip the missed dose and take their next ibandronate tablet in the morning of their chosen day, according to their original schedule.
  • Caution patient using 150 mg tablets to never take 2 tablets within the same week.
  • Instruct patient to discontinue therapy and seek medical care if any of the following occur: difficulty swallowing; pain behind breastbone; new or worsening heartburn.
  • Advise patient regarding interventions that help prevent osteoporosis: 1,500 mg/day of calcium (diet and supplements); vitamin D supplementation; weight-bearing exercise; reduction of cigarette smoking and excessive alcohol consumption.
  • Advise women to notify health care provider if pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
  • Instruct patient not to take any prescription or OTC medications, herbal preparations, or dietary supplements unless advised by health care provider.

How to store Ibandronate Sodium

  • Administer prescribed dose in the morning at least 60 min before the first food or beverage (other than water) of the day, or before taking any oral medication or supplements, including calcium or vitamins.
  • Have patient swallow tablet with a full glass (6 to 8 oz) of plain water and remain sitting or standing in an upright position for at least 60 min.
  • Caution patient not to suck or chew on tablets because of potential for oropharyngeal irritation.
  • Do not administer tablets with any liquid other than plain water. Administration of ibandronate with food, medication, juices, mineral water, coffee, or any other beverage will reduce ibandronate absorption and effectiveness.
  • Store tablets at controlled room temperature (59° to 86°F)..
