Daptomycin Information
The pharmacology action of Daptomycin
is that
it
binds to bacterial membranes and causes a rapid depolarization of membrane potential, which inhibits protein, DNA, and RNA synthesis, resulting in bacterial cell death.
Daptomycin
is used in
treatment
of complicated skin and skin structure infections caused by susceptible strains of Gram-positive microorganisms.

Side Effects of Daptomycin
Here are the list of some common side effects of Daptomycin :
- Hypotension (2%); cardiac failure (1% to 2%); hypertension (1%).
- Headache, insomnia (5%); dizziness (2%); anxiety, confusion (1% to 2%).
- Constipation, nausea (6%); diarrhea (5%); vomiting (3%); abdominal pain (1% to 2%); dyspepsia (1%).
- Anemia (2%); leukocytosis, thrombocytopenia, thrombocytosis, eosinophilia, increased international normalized ratio (less than 1%).
- Injection site reactions (6%); fungal infections (3%); fever (2%); cellulitis, decreased appetite, chest pain, back pain, Candida infections (1% to 2%).
Precaution and Warning while taking Daptomycin
The precaution and warnings of Daptomycin drug is as follows:
- Advise patient, family, or caregiver that medication will be prepared and administered by a health care provider in a health care setting.
- Advise patient to report injection site pain or redness, muscle weakness, pain, or tenderness, or abnormal sensations in the legs or arms (eg, pain, numbness) to health care provider.
- Advise patient to report signs of superinfection to health care provider: black furry tongue, white patches in mouth, foul-smelling stools, vaginal itching or discharge.
- Warn patient that diarrhea containing blood or pus may be a sign of a serious disorder and to seek medical care if noted and not to treat at home.
- Advise patient that follow-up examinations and lab tests may be required to monitor therapy and to keep appointments.
How to store Daptomycin
- Store vials in refrigerator (36° to 46°F). Reconstituted solution is stable for 12 hr at room temperature (68° to 77°F) or up to 48 hr if stored under refrigeration. The diluted solution is stable for 12 hr at room temperature or up to 48 hr if stored under refrigeration. The combined time (reconstituted vial and infusion bag) at room temperature should not exceed 12 hr; the combined time (reconstituted vial and infusion bag) under refrigeration should not exceed 48 hr.
