Calcipotriene Information

The pharmacology action of Calcipotriene is that Calcipotriene is a synthetic vitamin D 3 analog. In a manner similar to vitamin D, calcipotriene regulates skin cell production and development, thereby modifying the abnormal growth and production of keratinocytes, responsible for the scaly red patches characteristic of psoriasis.

Calcipotriene is used in treatment of plaque psoriasis. Calcipotriene is also used in treatment of chronic, moderately severe psoriasis of the scalp

Contraindication of Calcipotriene - Standard considerations; patients with acute psoriatic eruptions; patients with hypercalcemia or vitamin D toxicity.

Side Effects of Calcipotriene

Here are the list of some common side effects of Calcipotriene :

  • Erythema, dry skin, peeling,
  • rash, dermatitis,
  • worsening of psoriasis, transient burning,
  • stinging, tingling

Precaution and Warning while taking Calcipotriene

The precaution and warnings of Calcipotriene drug is as follows:

  • Advise patient that medication is applied topically to skin lesions bid.
  • Teach patient proper technique for applying cream: Wash hands; apply thin film of cream to affected area(s), rubbing in gently and completely. Wash hands after applying cream.
  • Teach patient proper technique for applying solution to scalp: Wash hands; comb hair to remove scaly debris, then part the hair and apply solution to lesions, rubbing in gently and completely; do not allow solution to spread to the forehead. Wash hands after applying solution.
  • Warn patient that scalp solution is flammable; keep away from open flame.
  • Advise patient that improvement may not be seen for 2 wk or more and may take up to 8 wk.
  • Advise patient to stop using the product and contact the health care provider if skin irritation develops.
  • Advise patient that follow-up visits to examine the skin lesions may be necessary and to keep appointments.

How to store Calcipotriene

  • For topical use only.
  • Avoid contact with the face and eyes.
  • Cream is usually applied to affected skin areas bid.
  • Apply a thin film of cream to affected area(s) and rub in gently and completely.
  • Solution is usually applied to affected scalp areas bid.
  • Comb hair to remove scaly debris, then part the hair and apply solution to lesions, rubbing in gently and completely.
  • Do not allow solution to spread to the forehead.
  • Store at controlled room temperature.
  • Protect from freezing.
  • Protect solution from sunlight.
